Civilization Crumbles A Little More

First of all, We actually closed yesterday. So now, instead of only having 27 years left to paying off my house, I now have 30. Somehow I’m supposed to be relieved about that. What I’m relieved about is the absence of random phone calls demanding to know how much I spent on Mars bars in the year 1992 or that I immediately fax over notarized measurements of my dick.

In celebration of this new indentured status, I took my family to dinner at a slightly expensive restaurant (well, really, I had to, since the closing took an hour and a half thanks to some clerical errors the lender had made); then I bought my wife a CD she needed for a school function, and myself a new PS2 game.

The game’s name is Rumble Roses, and it is Exhibit A that the complete and utter collapse of civilization is underway, but at least this is a harbinger I can get behind. Here’s a screencap from gamespy.com to give you an idea of what this is about:

Yes, it’s a leather-clad dominatrix wrestling in a physics-defying bra design. Posted by Hello

Rumble Roses is theoretically a wrestling game, but it will come to be known in the future as “The Cat Fight Simulator”. All the playable characters are nubile (and given the Japanese origin of the game, sometimes disturbingly young) women, who seem to lead double lives as wrestlers and exotic dancers. The characters run the gamut of fetish types, including Catholic schoolgirl, cowgirl, naughty schoolteacher, nurse, and a masked wrestler in a red leather devil suit, seen above.

I’ve never played a wrestling game before, so I can’t really judge how it stacks up as an actual game in the genre; it is possible to target your opponents’ arms, legs, body or head in “Submission Holds”, causing damage and wearing them down. The instructions, though, are maddingly obtuse about how to achieve those holds. I’ve managed it by accident several times, but attempts to replicate them fail.

A lot of the moves are contextual; if you’re near a turnbuckle and press circle, you’ll climb it. Mostly though, you’ll be landing punches or kicks, building up a “Lethal Move Counter” that will either let you unleash your character’s signature “Lethal Move” or “Killer Move”.

Here, though, is where it gets perverse: Successful submission holds and some of the fancier flips and signature moves fill up a heart on the receiving character’s life bar. Once this heart is full, she’s wide open, so to speak, for a “Humiliation Finish”. The opponent then has one minute to build up her Lethal Move Counter to at least 1 so she can perform the humiliation move. You fanboys can put your cash back in your wallets, there is no nudity involved in these “Humiliation KOs”, but they do put the finishing touch to a game that seems like an interactive version of the “apartment wrestling” videotapes found in the back of lower-rent salacious magazines.

That’s still not the full package. The story mode is predictably stupid, but that’s not what is going to sell this game: The matches are not confined to the ring – there is also an option for mud wrestling. And it is possible to tell your Playstation to play both sides of a match, making it a cat fight generator. These two, alone, should cause the game to fly off the shelves and into the hands of Spike TV fans.

Yes, it’s a stupid game, and the very fact that I own it probably demeans me. Strangely, I don’t seem to care about that too much.

Good Guys Win: Film at 11

Small victories do not make the evening news, but they are what makes life bearable.

1. In an hour, I should be signing off on my re-financing. I’ve groused about this a bit over at my Bad Movie Report 7th Anniversary Column, but it looks like it is finally coming to pass. Unless, like last time, we will get into the parking lot and receive a phone call telling us there are “issues”.

2. Sean Hannity has been banished back to the bowels of Hell. Well, not really; he has been moved from an afternoon slot on the local news radio station to a similar slot on another AM station, which also hosts Rush Limbaugh and, I guess, any number of other right-wing pundits. I would like to thank the liberal-controlled media for doing something for me, for a change.

3. God, I’m such a sap. Last Saturday, in 9 Chickweed Lane, uber-geek Amos finally kissed Edda. Today, in a continuation of that storyline, she returned the kiss with interest. It’s amazing (and, no doubt, a bit pathetic) how much a simple comic strip has brightened up my day.

Your regularly scheduled wailing and gnashing of teeth will resume tomorrow.

The Real World is Poisoning My Movies

Probably the worst, strangest aftereffect of the rancorous 2004 Presidential election is the fact that I am no longer able to watch a movie without discerning political undertones, even if they’re not really there.

Take, for instance, the 2004 version of Around the World in 80 Days; instead of a gentleman’s wager setting the titular journey in motion, the wager is made as a blow against a repressive, reified scientific establishment which feels “there is nothing left to discover”. Of course, I immediately saw the bleeding-heart liberals (in the person of Phileas Fogg) versus the current administration’s roadblocking of science. Stem cells were never mentioned, but that was unnecessary. Curse those confounded Hollywood socialists!

Speaking of which, Turner Classic Movies showed the 1933 Gabriel Over the White House Saturday night, a movie I had often read about but never seen. Dropping by the IMDb, I find the flick blasted as “Lame leftist propaganda” and “a love song for fascism”. It’s definitely the latter, but I’m bemused by the former.

Walter Huston plays a puppet President who, after a near-fatal accident, gets “divine inspiration” and starts shaking things up. He tackles the racketeer problem by turning the US Army into The Federal Police and sending tanks in to bust up the bootleggers. The gangsters are not subjected to a trial, but a court martial – which ends up with them on the wrong side of a firing squad. Apparently they were prisoners of war, and thus didn’t have Constitutional rights.

Stop me if this is sounding familiar.

Huston’s next feat is to settle Europe’s war debts by threatening them. “America won’t stand for a war!” Huston is told. If I hadn’t been so ill, I might have guffawed at that.

It is, indeed, four square a love song for fascism, and I saw far too much that was familiar in it. And this is coming from a person with fascist leanings. Yes, I’ll pick up the tar brush and paint myself a liberal, but I also believe in a strong central government; I realize only too well how, therefore, horrible things could be done for “the common good”.

Now if, when I eventually see The Incredibles and Episode III, I am still perceiving this crap, I give up.

I Thought You Wrote About Movies

Nah, I do that in my other endeavors.

No, honest to God, I had hoped this would be anything but a blogging of political screeds. There are more than enough of those, and they’re better written, to boot. But if I’m going to write about movies, I feel like it needs to be over at my other ventures, since people like, you know, read those. Far as I know, I’m still the only one reading this.

So. Two political thoughts. I hope getting these out of my head will allow me to move on to better, less irritating, more trivial things. Both of these thoughts allow me to unknot my entrails over the next four years.

First: historically, second terms suck for incumbent presidents. Nixon and Clinton both went through hell, and even the demigod Reagan (whose claim to godlike reverence still eludes me) faced increased opposition. However, since the media are apparently a bunch of cowed lap dogs at the moment (attack dogs in the case of Fox), this may only be half a straw I’m clutching. Which brings us to the second thought:

I now have four more years to achieve one of my great dreams, being the first person to punch out Bill O’Reilly or Anne Coulter on live TV.

‘Cause, you know, liberals are the party of hate.

Post-Mortem A-Go-Go!

Well, a week of grinding deadlines at work does wonders for those post-election blues, I can tell you. Whilst dealing with script-writing duties, and even an unforeseen return to my old gig (all that was missing was a holographic message stating, “Help me Obi-Wan, you’re my only hope”), it became very easy to accept that nothing had actually changed, and the previous few months of increasingly rancorous election verbiage had just been a half-remembered nightmare, a bit of undigested potato.

During a bit of downtime, I did attempt to log on to Blogger and make myself look less cavalier about writing in this thing (though at the moment, I’m the only person reading this, so one wonders why…) . Things were a bit messed up, to say the least. I can only assume that the rest of Blogistan was writing in, either conducting their own “What Went Wrong?” post-mortems or crowing that “Jesus Speaks Through the Republicans“. As ever, the only opinion I find worth considering is that of The Rude Pundit, who basically embraces the ugliness coming our way and feels the best response is ugliness of our own.

But here I am in Blogistan, so I feel I should trot out my own blitherings – either that, or exclaim how some musician no one else has ever heard of is either “kEWl” or “teh suck” – though, as usual, all I can do is report on what’s going on inside my head.

I’ve been trying to figure out why I was so surprised at the outcome, even though surprise should be my response – after all, 51% of the popular vote is by no means a mandate, it’s more like the convicts managing to get in that last touchdown as the finishing gun goes off in The Longest Yard. No, I expected a landslide, a vast tsunami of Right Thought, shocking the neocons and telling them, “No, we’re not going to play this game anymore.”

The reason for that, of course, is that like most people, I hang with my own herd. There are not a whole lot of folks in my circle of friends who claim to be conservative (and those that do still have a lop-sided grin when they speak of “The liberal media”, so they at least know they’re spouting bullshit). On my regular reading list is the aforementioned Rude Pundit and The Smirking Chimp. Oh, yes, I was polarized, and I allowed myself to believe that most of the Nation was, too.

Trouble is, only 49% was polarized in my direction.

So I find myself in an island of stunned liberalism in a red state. My fucking representative is Tom DeLay, for God’s sake, who I have been trying almost my entire adult life – unsuccessfully – to vote out of office. I was shocked a few years back to find an article entitled “Why Everyone Hates Texas”. Why, I wondered, would anyone hate us? What did we do to deserve that? Guess I know now. Though don’t expect any rollovers from me if you want to vent your spleen in my home’s direction. You’ve got just as many idiots in your neck of the woods as mine, and I don’t hate you for that.

I guess in the coming years I’m going to be feeling more and more like a member of the French Resistance, which is okay, because that means in the movies that are eventually made about these dark times, I’ll be played by some ruggedly handsome European type, instead of an aging Jack Black, which would be closer to the truth.

Hey, Bartender

I wish I were smarter. Then I might be able to understand why, in their interactive, self-updating map of America and her electoral votes, the Associated Press has Utah, with 0% of precincts reporting, is a lock for Bush, yet Pennsylvania, with 41% of precincts voting and showing a decisive Kerry victory, remains “undecided”.

I’m not espousing any conspiracy theories, I’d just like to know why. Cynically, I could think that it’s because CNN has predicted that Bush will take Utah, and AP doesn’t want to be left behind. However, I still want to hold onto some shred of optimism, and believe that surely someone out there is still interested in actual journalism.

I want a drink very badly, and will go to remedy this need soon. I suspect a lot of Americans feel the same way, and it’s likely to be a nation of hangover sufferers tomorrow. In fact, Big_Sexy over at Fark has posted this potentially lethal Election Drinking Game:

1. Any time a state is declared for a candidate with less than 1% of precincts reporting – 2 drinks

2. Someone says “Palm Beach,” “Dangling Chads,” or “2000 Election debacle” – 2 drinks.

3. Any report of voter fraud – 1 drink.

4. Geraldo Rivera – 3 drinks

5. Someone refers to Ralph Nader in a negative way – 1 drink.

6. Anyone mentions Michael Badnarik – 2 drinks.

7. 2 networks call a state for different candidates – 3 drinks.

8. Al Gore interviews – 2 drinks.

9. Tim Russert gets out a dry erase board – 2 drinks.

10. “Flip flop” – 1 drink.

11. Someone mentions the possibility of an electoral tie resulting in a Bush-Edwards administration – 3 drinks.

12. Someone references Michael Moore or Swift Boat Veterans For Truth – 2 drinks.

13. Karl Rove is referred to as a political genius – 3 drinks.

14. “Mekong Delta” – 2 drinks.

15. “Falafel” and “O’Reilly” come up in the same conversation – 4 drinks.

16. “Dixville Notch” – 1 drink

17. Someone refers to a poll from The Christian Science Monitor.

18. “Liberal media” – 3 drinks.

19. Gideon Yago pretends to be a real journalist – 1 drink.

20. Jon Stewart calls someone a dick – 2 drinks.

21. A swing state is called for a candidate – 3 drinks.

22. “Fair and Balanced” – 1 drink.

23. A shot of John Kerry “playing” a sport – 2 drinks.

24. A shot of George Bush wearing a cowboy hat – 2 drinks.

25. “Osama Bin Laden” or “The War on Terror” – 1 drink.

26. “The most important election in our lifetime” – 2 drinks.

27. Teresa Heinz Kerry appears to have played her own special drinking game – 1 drink.

28. “Partisan Hackery” – 2 drinks.

29. John Edwards appears with his perfect hair – 1 drink.

30. Dick Cheney appears with his lesbian daughter. Did I mention she was a lesbian? – 2 drinks.

31. “Married up” – 2 drinks.

32. Al Sharpton seems to be the voice of reason in a conversation – 1 drink.

33. Florida goes for your candidate – finish the bottle.

He then finishes with “Can’t wait for the “2004 Presidential Election Recount Drinking Game!”

Anyone playing this game was royally smashed by 8pm, just on the strength of #1, above.

I’m going to stick with the AP map, as unlike the CNN map, it allows me to mouse over the states and see the actual popular vote, and how many precincts have reported. Strange calls and all.

The desire to drink until I vomit and spend the next day feeling like the floor of a mosh pit was burned out of me in college. Instead of following Big_Sexy’s fiendish (but nonetheless perceptive) path of destruction, I think I’ll just shake myself a single martini, to ease the dismay and prompt the depression. I’ll indulge in extras olives, because dammit, I’m going to end up on the plus side of something tonight.

public service announcement

Vote, dammit. I want to see democracy in action for just one day.

Then we can settle in for the weeks of court battles, and get all cynical again.

Rez Re-release?

There’s a rumor that’s passed around OPM magazine a couple of times and recently picked up by GMR (both 1up.com affiliated, hmmm) that Sega is considering re-releasing the psychedelic music game/shooter Rez, possibly as soon as November. This is good news for those of us who missed the game on what must have been a very limited initial release in the states; a used copy can rarely be found for less than fifty bucks. And all indications point toward the re-release at a price point of about twenty dollars. Nailing down hard info on this is maddeningly difficult, however.

Sadly, I don’t think Sega will be releasing the Trance Vibrator peripheral along with it, as reported in game girl advance: Sex in Games: Rez Vibrator back in 2002. This article is pretty harmless but might not be considered safe for work.

Hey, there’s one of these up for sale on eBay. There’s a thought for Valentine’s Day…

Again With the Hating!

The Coming Civil War is an article by “Dr. Albert Oxford, PhD”, about many things, but mainly the polarization of the US in these troubled times. Given that it is posted on pointlesswasteoftime.com, I doubt the veracity of Dr. Oxford’s citizenship, if not his actual existence; nonetheless, it tells the truth, as all great satire should.

Now I really should get to work.

I Never Learn

Here is the newest in a long, long line of distracting, defeatist, self-destructive urges I have given into in my life.

You see, I already have two long-standing Web projects: the long-running Bad Movie Report, and I’ve been editor of Attack of the 50 Foot DVD for some time; frequently, I’m the only one writing reviews there.

But I’m also, for the first time in my life, actively making a living by writing; a six-month contract during which, in this particular phase, I am delivering a full-fledged script every three and a half days.

Needless to say, There has not been much done in the non-or-low-paying world of the movie websites. Props to fellow Webmaster The Hong Kong Cavalier for making sure 50 Foot DVD didn’t become a cobweb-site like the BMR, for which I’ve written nothing since August. Not even my usual Yearly Anniversary Column, which usually degenerated into cranky old man ravings, anyway.

Well, that’s not entirely true. I had written half of the Cranky Old Man column, but then my glorious new Gateway laptop decided to blow it’s sexy LCD monitor, and now Gateway has it in its bosom, replacing the sorry little critter. Hooray for warranties. And hooray for my old steam-driven computer, which still soldiers on bravely so I might continue to get work done. Or not, in the current case.

One of the first things in that half-formed column, besides the traditional apologies for not updating, was the sentiment, “Thank God I don’t have a blog – that would just be one more thing to not update.”

Now look at me. I have a blog.

More later. I must buy groceries.
